DONG QUAI

Herbal Medicine is the backbone of Alternative, Complementary and Integrative healthcare. Here you will find the best and purest forms of herbal teas, packs, tinctures and formulas.

Angelica sinensis, commonly known as "dong quai" or "female ginseng" is a herb from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

Dong Quai, also known as Angelica or Dang Gui, has been a highly treasured herb in the Orient for several thousand years. It is often referred to as "female ginseng", and is excellent as an all purpose women's herb. Next to Panax Ginseng, the root of Dong Quai is undoubtedly the most honored and respected herb in China, and is quickly gaining an equal reputation among users in the rest of the world.

Dong Quai has been used for centuries in China for regulating the menstrual cycle and easing menstrual pain and cramping. It is used to promote circulation, to regulate the menstrual cycle and stop discomforts of menstruation and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). In Western herbal terms, it is used for dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), metrorrhagia (too much menstruation) and amenor-rhea (too little, or no, menstruation). It can be used to help women regain normal menstrual cycles after taking birth control pills. It has also also proven helpful for relieving hot flashes during menopause.

Dong Quai has been used to help sleeplessness and promote normal blood pressure stability for both men and women. (The affect on blood pressure can be an overall lowering although sometimes it may rise slightly first, followed by a decline). Dong Quai is used as a tonic, cardiotonic, respiratory tonic and liver tonic. Most of the actions of this herb depend on the presence of coumarins, phytosterols, polysaccharides and flavonoids.

This herb is used by herbalists for the female reproductive system, as they believe that it is a uterine tonic and hormonal regulator. It is often used in premenstrual syndrome formulas as well as menopausal formulas. However, this herb is not recommended during pregnancy due to possible hormonal, anticoagulant, and antiplatelet properties. Animal research has noted conflicting effects on the uterus, with reports of both stimulation and relaxation. Dong quai is traditionally viewed as increasing the risk of miscarriage.

Drug Interactions

Dong quai increases the anticoagulant effects of the drug Warfarin and consequently increases the risk of bleeding.

HE SHO WU

Polygonum multiflorum, better known as Chinese knotweed or Flowery knotweed, is a widely used Chinese herb. It is said to rejuvenate the body, and is also commonly known as fo-ti, fo-ti-teng, ho shou wu, or he shou wu (traditional Chinese: 何首烏; simplified Chinese: 何首乌; pinyin: hé shǒu wū).

He Shouwu ('Black-haired Mr. He'), a Chinese man who is reputed to have lived until the age of 132, is the first consumer of this herb to be reported[citation needed]. The Chinese patent medicine called Shou Wu Chih has Polygonum multiflorum as one of its primary ingredients.

As a herb specimen, it is a quickly spreading vine that will cover anything rapidly. There are delicate flowers that appear in the fall.

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), P. multiflorum is believed to:

  • Tonify the kidneys
  • Balance a fragile yin.
  • Treat weak bones and premature graying of hair.
  • Protect the skin against UVB damage[1]

When taken internally, P. multiflorum also has a laxative effect.

P. multiflorum contains stilbene glycosides similar to resveratrol and with superior antioxidant activity.[2]

Resveratrol is extracted from P. multiflorum's close relative, Japanese knotweed (P. cuspidatum). Resveratrol has been suggested to extend lifespan by a variety of mechanisms.

HORNY GOAT WEED

Horny goat weed (also called Epimedium grandiflorum, rowdy lamb herb, barrenwort, bishop's hat, fairy wings, or yin yang huo) is a Chinese herb that has been traditionally used to treat impotence, infertility, and back pain. The herb has recently gained attention as a possible natural alternative to Viagra. The herb is believed to be beneficial in increasing libido in both men and women.

  • Horny goat weed has a testosterone-like effect in that it is reported to increase sperm production, as well as stimulating blood flow to the penis.1
  • Horny goat weed is reported to fight muscle wasting in HIV/AIDS patients, and chemical components of the herb have been shown to fight the HIV virus in clinical testing.
  • Side effects of horny goat weed include: dizziness, vomiting, nosebleeds, increased thirst, and dry mouth. These side effects were reported with prolonged use of the herb.
  • If you suffer from a prostate disorder or have high blood pressure, it is imperative that you consult a physician or trained herbal practitioner before using horny goat weed.1

Epimedium, also known as Rowdy Lamb Herb, Barrenwort, Bishop's Hat, Fairy Wings, Horny Goat Weed, or Yin Yang Huo (Chinese: 淫羊藿), is a genus of about 60 or more species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. The large majority are endemic to southern China, with further outposts in Europe,[1] and central, southern and eastern Asia.

Epimedium species are hardy perennials. The majority have four-petaled "spider-like" flowers in spring. Many are believed to be aphrodisiacs, particularly horny goat weed.[2].

Many species of Epimedium are alleged to have aphrodisiac qualities. According to legend, this property was discovered by a Chinese goat herder who noticed sexual activity in his flock after they ate the weed. It is sold as a health supplement; usually in raw herb, tablet, or capsule form and sometimes blended with other supplements. The over-exploitation of wild populations of Epimedium for use in traditional Chinese medicine is having potentially serious consequences for the long-term survival of several species, none of which are widely cultivated for medicinal purposes.

The "active ingredient" in Epimedium is icariin[3], which can be found in standardized extracts from 5% up to 60% potent. Strengths above that are usually reserved for lab use.

Icariin is purported to work by increasing levels of nitric oxide, which relax smooth muscle. It has been demonstrated to relax rabbit penile tissue by nitric oxide and PDE-5 activity.[4] Other research has demonstrated that injections of Epimedium extract directly into the penis of the rat results in an increase in penile blood pressure.[5]

Like sildenafil (Viagra), icariin, the active compound in Epimedium, inhibits the activity of PDE-5. In vitro assays have demonstrated that icariin inhibits PDE-5 with an IC50 of around 1 micromolar,[6][7] while sildenafil has an IC50 of about 6.6 nanomolar (.0066 micromolar) and vardenafil (Levitra) has an IC50 of about 0.7 nanomolar (.0007 micromolar).[8] Measured differently, the EC50 of icariin is approximately 4.62 micromolar, while sildenafil's is .42 micromolar.[9] The amount of oral administration of Epidemium extract necessary to achieve these relative concentrations is unclear from the literature.

A recently published Italian study modified icariin structurally and investigated a number of derivatives.[10] Inhibitory concentrations for PDE-5 close to sildenafil could be reached. Moreover, the most potent PDE-5 inhibitor of this series was also found to be a less potent inhibitor of phosphodiesterase-6 (PDE-6) and cyclic adenosine monophosphate-phosphodiesterase (cAMP-PDE), thus showing it to have more specificity for PDE-5 than sildenafil.
Epimedium has been shown to up-regulate genes associated with nitric oxide production and changes in adenosine/guanine monophosphate balance in ways that other PDE5 inhibitors do not.

PANAX GINSENG

Ginseng is each of eleven species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, in the Panax genus, in the family Araliaceae. It grows in the Northern Hemisphere in eastern Asia (mostly northern China, Korea, and eastern Siberia), typically in cooler climates; Panax vietnamensis, discovered in Vietnam, is the southernmost ginseng found. Korean ginseng is widely considered the best quality.[1] This article focuses on the Series Panax ginsengs, which are the adaptogenic herbs, principally Panax ginseng and P. quinquefolius. Ginseng is characterized by the presence of ginsenosides.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is not a true ginseng, but a different plant that was renamed as "Siberian ginseng" as a marketing ploy; instead of a fleshy root, it has a woody root; instead of ginsenosides, eleutherosides is the active compound. Eleutherosides are classified as another adaptogen.

Traditional uses

Both American and Panax (Asian) ginseng roots are taken orally as adaptogens, aphrodisiacs, nourishing stimulants, and in the treatment of type II diabetes, as well as sexual dysfunction in men. The root is most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. Ginseng leaf, although not as highly prized, is sometimes also used; as with the root it is most often available in dried form.

This ingredient may also be found in some popular energy drinks: usually the "tea" varieties or functional foods. Usually ginseng is in subclinical doses and it does not have measurable medicinal effects. It can be found in cosmetic preparations as well, with similar lack of effect.

Modern science and ginseng

It has been difficult to verify the medicinal benefits of ginseng using science, as there are contradictory results from different studies, possibly due to the wide variety and quality of ginseng used in studies. High-quality studies of the effects of ginseng are rare.

Ginseng is promoted as an adaptogen (a product that increases the body's resistance to stress), one which can to a certain extent be supported with reference to its anti-carcinogenic and antioxidant properties, although animal experiments to determine whether longevity and health were increased in the presence of stress gave negative results.

A comparative, randomized and double-blind study at the National Autonomous University of Mexico indicates it may be "a promising dietary supplement" when assessed for an increase in quality of life. It should be noted, however, that exclusion rates in this study were high. 124 participants were excluded from this study "due to lack of compliance with the treatment" whereas 164 participants in the control group and 338 participants in the ginseng group completed the study.

A recent study at the University of Hong Kong has identified Ginseng to have anti-inflammatory effects. The study found that out of the nine ginsenosides they identified, seven could selectively inhibit expression of the inflammatory gene CXCL-10.

P. ginseng appear to inhibit some characteristics associated with cancer in animal models; nevertheless, this effect is unclear in humans. A randomized, double-blind pilot study noted ginseng appeared to reduce fatigue in cancer patients.

Ginseng and reproductive activity

A 2002 study by the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (published in the annals of the New York Academy of Sciences) found that in laboratory animals, both Asian and American forms of ginseng enhance libido and copulatory performance. These effects of ginseng may not be due to changes in hormone secretion, but to direct effects of ginseng, or its ginsenoside components, on the central nervous system and gonadal tissues. In males, ginsenosides can facilitate penile erection. This is consistent with traditional Chinese medicine and Native American medicinal uses of ginseng.
Ginseng is known to contain phytoestrogens.

CHINESE KNOTWEED

Polygonum multiflorum, better known as Chinese knotweed or Flowery knotweed, is a widely used Chinese herb. It is said to rejuvenate the body, and is also commonly known as fo-ti, fo-ti-teng, ho shou wu, or he shou wu (traditional Chinese: 何首烏; simplified Chinese: 何首乌; pinyin: hé shǒu wū).
Etymology

SCHISANDRA CHINESIS

Schisandra chinensis (五味子 in Chinese, pinyin: wǔ wèi zi, literally "five flavor berry") is a deciduous woody vine native to forests of Northern China and the Russian Far East. It is hardy in USDA Zone 4. The plant likes some shade with moist, well-drained soil. The species itself is dioecious, thus flowers on a female plant will only produce fruit when fertilized with pollen from a male plant. However, there is a hybrid selection titled "Eastern Prince" which has perfect flowers and is self-fertile. Gardeners should beware that seedlings of "Eastern Prince" are sometimes sold under the same name but are typically single-sex plants.

Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is considered one of the 50 fundamental herbs. They are most often used in dried form, and boiled to make a tea. Medicinally it is used as a tonic and restorative adaptogen with notable clinically documented liver protecting effects. The primary hepatoprotective (liver protecting) and immuno-modulating constituents are the lignans schizandrin, deoxyschizandrin, gomisins, and pregomisin, which are found in the seeds of the fruit. It should not be used by pregnant women.

Use in traditional Chinese medicine

In traditional Chinese medicine, Schisandra chinensis (known as wu wei zi (Chinese: 五味子)) is believed to:

  1. Astringe Lung Qi and nourish the Kidneys
  2. Restrain the essence and stop Diarrhea--astringent Kidneys
  3. Arrest excessive sweating from Yin or Yang deficiency
  4. Calm the Spirit by tonification of Heart and Kidney
  5. Generate body fluids and alleviate thirst

Wu wei zi is believed to enter the Lung, Heart and Kidney meridians and its properties are considered to be sour and warm. The typical dose is between 1.5 and 9 grams.
